For more information please contact Female Development Officers Vince Aston on 0401640399 or Gary Davidson on 0439031007 With a mix of experience and first time representatives, Western Waves U/18 Girls started the state championships in fine form, with a win over South Metro. Having won the toss and electing to bat , Western Waves started well with Emma Kearney(42) and Kelsi Gull(22) putting on a 76 run partnership. Western waves lost a few quick wickets but Laura Speed(49n.o.) and Narelle Place(19) steadied the ship and after the allotted 30 overs the team were 5/158. The girls got off to the perfect start with Emma Kearney taking a wicket with the first ball. It was down hill from there for the metro side and after 30 overs were 8/111. Emma took 3/13 off 6 overs, Steph Fary 2/11 off 4 and a wicket each to Emily Jackson, Kesli Gull and Narelle Place. The afternoon game the girls were up against the very strong West Metro that boasted 5 state players. West Metro compiled a very healthy total of 1/147. Emma Kearney the only wicket taker 1/9 off 6 overs. Laura Speed bowled well without reward. Although the girls tried hard they were not able to reach the total and after the 30 overs were 40 runs short. Penny Mather opened and made a very classy 18 before running herself out, Sam LaFranchi made 23 and Laura Speed once again showed her class with an unbeaten 36. Day 2 and the girls were up against Gippsland. A win would ensure a top 4 placing. The girls did not disappoint compiling 7/135. Emma Kearney(51 retired) and Laura Speed(50 retired) were the main contributors. Gippsland were never in the hunt, with Kearney taking a wicket with the first ball of the innings again, they only made 8/82. Steph Fary, Emily Jackson, Shannyn Carter and Emma Kearney all took 2 wickets each. In the afternoon the girls were up against Central Highlands with a place in the final up for grabs. Although not amassing a great score the Waves made 7/110. Consistent performers Laura Speed(28) and Emma Kearney(24), were well supported by Emily Jackson(16) and Kelsi Gull(11). At the half way mark of the run chase, Central Highlands were 2/54. Coach Michael Kearney asked for a bit more from his players and told them the game was far from over. These words proved correct as the game came down to the last over. Central Highlands needed all 6 balls to win to be 5/114. A special mention must go to Shannyn Carter who only plays cricket against her brothers on the nature strip at home in Edenhope. She was given the unenviable task of bowling the last over and although she felt she let the side down, we all thought she bowled superbly. The final day the girls played against East Metro in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. The team played well to bowl out East for 94 in the 26th over. The wickets were shared amongst the players, with Laura Speed, Emily Jackson and Sharryn Carter all taking 2 wickets each. The run chase was progressing smoothly until a mini collapse saw the team going from 4/65 to be 7/73. Steph Fary and Kelsi Gull, however showed cool heads under pressure, to guide the team to victory. Emma and Laura were rewarded for their great championship, with selection in the all star team. I would like to mention a couple of players, Anna Burger and Sam Kearney, who Michael and I felt improved with each game. Both players have only played a handful of games in the Hamilton Womens comp, but their fielding and attitude out on the ground was superb. Loretta Kearney
