U14 State Championships30th January 2005 An extremely successful competition for our Western Waves girls losing only one match for the week and narrowly. Coaches report and team photo follow. U/14 Girls Western Waves The Western Waves U/14 girls cricket squad traveled to Melbourne to compete in the inaugural U14 State Championships competed over three days from January 23rd to 25th. The strong squad of 13 girls formed one of the 16 regions from country and metro Victoria competing at the championships.
The championships were held at the Donath Reserve, Reservoir.
Game 1 The first game of the championships was against the North East Knights. The Western Waves captain Laura Speed lost the toss, with the opposition electing to bat first. The Waves bowlers were sometimes a little erratic in their first game, but soon discovered that when bowling a good line they would be rewarded. In a strong team bowling performance with 10 bowlers used, the Waves bowled out the Knights for 63 in the 22nd over. Of the 10 wickets, seven were bowled, with the multiple wicket takers Louise Cameron and Laura Speed two wickets a piece. Despite the impressive scorecard, there was certainly room for improvement in the bowling department with 41 of the total 63 runs made up from extras.
The Waves strong top order ably supported by the capable lower order set themselves to bat the full 30 overs. An early wicket with vice captain Marni Perry removed for eight had number three Laura Speed at the crease early in the innings. The Waves established a partnership with Speed and opener Stephanie Townsend taking the score to 59 before Townsend was dismissed for 20. The Waves moved past the target of 63 in the 8th over, allowing the team to gain some confidence in the first game whilst compiling a large total. Laura Speed was a catalyst with a great captains innings retiring on 61. With impressive stroke play and intelligent batting, Speed reached the boundary on 11 occasions. Throughout the innings Speed was well supported by Libby Whiting with 18, and in the middle order Sarah Williams provided evidence of her strong all round game with a solid 30 (five boundaries) and a quick fired 14 from Ashleigh Elkins with 14 (three boundaries) coming in at number ten. After 30 overs the Waves convincingly won the game with the score of 8/243.
Game 2 The second game was contested against the metro team, North West Wizards. The Waves won the toss and chose to bat after an impressive batting performance in the first game. The innings was again opened with the technically sound Perry and hard hitting Townsend. The pair batting superbly and it wasn’t until the Townsend retired after making a half century that the stance came to an end. Perry displayed great concentration, respecting the good balls and working the ball around constantly turning the strike over. It wasn’t until the 24th over that the Waves lost their first wicket when Perry was dismissed for a well compiled 32 with the score on 156. Townsend was the aggressor punishing the loose deliveries, in particular the full deliveries that were dispatched straight back up the ground hitting eight boundaries before the mandatory retirement finishing with 51 runs. Speed again came in at number three and with a very solid foundation, the steady flow of runs continued. Early in Speed’s innings a partnership with Perry before her dismissal followed by a short innings by Whiting in the closing overs, seven not out, taking the Waves to a total of 164. The innings closed after 25 overs due to time. Speed again was not out with 42 runs in quick time (6 boundaries), clearly the stand out with the bat in the first day.
The Waves bowling was solid with signs of improvement bowling to the game plan and lifting the standard in the field. With opening bowlers Asheigh Elkins and Tamika Edwards troubling the openers, it was Edwards breaking through in her first over with the score 1/7 in the second over. Edwards was again instrumental in the next dismissal, taking the catch of the championships fielding at mid off from the bowling of Sarah Williams. Edwards had a ball driven that looked like it was falling short before a desperate lunge forward with Edward scraping her fingertips beneath the ball, followed by ecstatic celebrations from the Waves. This momentum lifted team to another level. Marni Perry was rested from wicket keeping duties in the second half of the innings allowing a successful short bowling stint with 2/1. Sophie Alexander was dynamite in the field with a direct hit late in the innings. At the close of the innings the Waves held the Wizards to 7/88 after 25 overs, winning the match.
Game 3 Undefeated after day one the Waves played the last of their preliminary games in their pool against the Outer East Eagles. Both teams were undefeated and were playing off for top position in the pool, with the winner at worst guaranteed a top four placing. The Waves won the toss and batted first, finding runs much harder to come by with the well drilled Eagles outfit bowling and excellent line and were very sharp in the field. An early dismissal with Townsend (4 runs) bowled, Speed joined Perry early in the innings. The pair steadied working hard for every run with some good running between wickets. Speed was dismissed for the first time during the championships on 24 in the 17th over with the score 2/61. Three quick wickets fell leaving Alex Downes (8 not out) and Marni Perry (19 not out) to bat through the final overs taking the total to 5/90 from 26 overs. Perry carried the bat, batting all 25 overs when fellow teammates found conditions difficult with the strong pressure applied with tight bowling.
The Waves needed early wickets, with Townsend getting the breakthrough early in the innings. After this the Eagles consolidated taking the score to 3/58 at drinks on track for a comfortable victory. The Waves had other ideas, in particular Mykala Haddow. The young talented Haddow took two wickets in consecutive deliveries. On the hatrick delivery there was a strong appeal for a close LBW that was turned down. Shortly afterwards a run out was effected and all of a sudden the Eagles were 7/79 in the 22nd over. Haddow in her second over then removed the Eagles key batsmen to take her third wicket. The score was 8/83 in the 23rd over giving the Waves a glimmer of hope. The Eagles lower order took the score past the Waves total to win the game, before the Waves bowled them out for 101 in the last over, with Townsend picking up her second wicket.
Semi – Final Finishing second in their pool, the Waves at best could now finish fifth. They certainly learnt a lot from their loss, and in the remaining games were looking to emulate the disciplined bowling and fielding performance displayed by the Eagles in the previous game. The Waves were playing off in the semi finals against the Northern Rivers who also finished second in their pool. The Waves were determined to finish the day strongly. The form returned to the Waves batting line up compiling 131 runs from 23 overs. It was the top order again with a solid start from Townsend (9 ret hurt) and Perry (14 runs), before Speed again controlling the innings batted the remaining overs to finish one short of another half century on 49 not out (6 boundaries). Sarah Williams looked dangerous making 20, and Libby Whiting made 14 not out in even time to finish the innings with Speed.
The Waves bowled well early before Nothern Rivers fought back valiantly creating a contest later in the innings. The Northern Rivers fell short of the total, finishing on 6/114. The game was set up in the early overs, with a fantastic display of tight medium pace bowling from Sarah Williams finishing with 1/0 from six overs. It was then Ashleigh Elkins who opened the bowling, and then came back later in the innings in her second spell to take two wickets, that quashed any hopes of the Northern Rivers stealing victory from the Waves.
Final placing The Waves in the final game to determine the final placing’s were contesting for 5th position. Against the strong South East Seagulls outfit, this was a game requiring a contribution from all 13 players at various stages of the game. The Waves batted first. The strong opening combination was broken at 1/27 with Townsend removed for 12, and Speed to follow shortly after for seven. The Waves needed someone to stand up and compile a competitive total with reliable opener Marni Perry. In one of the most important partnerships for the championships, Sarah Williams went from strength to strength in her innings of 36 batting through until the 25th over. Perry was excellent again with 24 with a number of players providing enough resistance to support Williams during the innings. Libby Whiting (9 not out) and Alex Downes (5 not out) closed the innings with the Waves 8/117.
This defendable total was always going to be tight, and it was likely that the Waves would need to bowl out the opposition to win the game. The opening bowlers Townsend and Elkins were unlucky to be wicket less early in the innings. The Seagulls were cruising early before Edwards struck with the first wicket falling at 1/33. From this point forward the bowling was well supported in the field with a number of bowlers returning very good figures. The multiple wicket takers were strike bowler Tamika Edwards 3/13, and strong all rounder Alex Downes 3/7, partnership breaker Mykala Haddow 2/2, and player of the match Sarah Williams with 2/20. The opposition coach praised the Waves players for their excellent display in the field, which secured the win and fifth position from 16 in the state championships.
It was fantastic to see such a high standard of cricket throughout the championships at the U/14 level. The Western Waves girls will definitely be much better players for the experience, with improvement evident after 3 days, mixing with the best teams in the state. It must be noted that the one team that defeated the Waves, Outer East Eagles, later finished a close runner up in the final. The performance of captain Laura Speed with the bat received a special mention during the presentations, only narrowly missing out on the player of the championships award. Other strong performances came from vice captain Marni Perry as an opening bat and wicket keeper, as well as Stephanie Townsend as an opening bat and strike bowler, both are eligible for U/14’s again next year. Sarah Williams proved to be talented all rounder and will only improve with more cricket and coaching. Many of the Waves girls are a strong chance to be picked a squad of 30 to trial for the U/15 state team later this year. The performance of the Waves is a reflection of the local coaches in the region providing opportunities for the girls as well as the work from many others particularly Regional Cricket Manager Stephen Field establishing a Hamilton women’s competition. This has boosted participations rates and the standard of participants even at this early age. This was supported with the U/14’s fifth placing and recently the girls U/16’s third placing at the state championship.
